Leadership Lessons That Stand the Test of Time

Over decades of leading nonprofits — and nearly a decade helping organizations with nonprofit executive recruitment — one truth stands above the rest:

👉 Great people make all the difference.

No matter the size of your nonprofit, its budget, or its programs, your success depends on the people you attract, inspire, and retain. The best advice I ever received on leadership comes down to four key practices every nonprofit executive should embrace.

1. Great Leaders Listen and Stay Present

It’s easy for nonprofit executives to get buried in board meetings, donor strategies, and staff management. But true leadership begins with presence.

When an employee or colleague is speaking, be fully locked in. Listen without distraction. Authentic listening builds trust, shows respect, and strengthens decision-making.

Leaders can’t do all the work themselves — they must empower others. And empowerment starts with listening.

2. Remove the “Energy Vampires”

Every leader has seen it: the staff member who drains energy from the room, blocks new ideas, or shifts blame. Left unchecked, “energy vampires” sap morale and stall innovation.

As Jon Gordon famously put it: “No Energy Vampires Allowed!”

If you’ve invested in your people with training, support, and authentic leadership, then you should feel confident holding others accountable. Sometimes that means making the tough decision to let a toxic presence go — creating space for rising stars who bring energy and mission-driven passion.

3. Get Organized and Set the Stage

The leader’s job is not to do everything — it’s to set the stage so others can perform at their best.

That means:

  • Responding to team needs within 24 hours.

  • Following a “48-hour rule” for donor, board, and partner communications.

  • Creating a clear vision and annual initiatives your team can repeat back to you.

  • Leading weekly meetings where you are the most prepared person in the room.

Organization communicates respect for others’ time and sets a high bar for accountability.

4. Practice Servant Leadership

Leadership isn’t about titles — it’s about taking care of the people in your charge.

As a nonprofit executive, you serve in multiple ways:

  • Your team — by caring about their growth and aligning assignments with their strengths.

  • Your community — by staying rooted in the needs and realities of those you serve.

  • Your board — by valuing their time, networks, and insights as vital resources.

Servant leadership builds loyalty, fosters trust, and inspires people to give their best effort.

Great People Make All the Difference

Every piece of advice I’ve received points back to this single truth: success in nonprofits comes down to people. If you surround yourself with talented, mission-driven individuals — and lead them with presence, organization, accountability, and service — your organization will thrive.

At The Batten Group, we specialize in nonprofit executive search because we know great people are the ultimate differentiator.
